NotebookLM Pricing in 2026
NotebookLM pricing starts at free and climbs to $200 per month — but here's the part that catches most business owners out: you cannot buy NotebookLM on its own. Every paid tier arrives bundled inside something else, either a Google AI subscription, a qualifying Google Workspace plan, or a Google Cloud Enterprise license. That matters enormously, because if your team is already on Google Workspace Business Standard or higher, you very likely have NotebookLM Plus included already — and paying $19.99 a month for Google AI Pro on top of it would be spending money on capacity you already own. Below is the full 2026 breakdown, and how to check what you're actually entitled to before you reach for a credit card.

Quick Takeaways
- NotebookLM is free to start. The Standard tier gives you 100 notebooks, 50 sources per notebook, and 50 chats per day with no trial period and no credit card.
- Paid consumer tiers run $7.99 to $200/month, bundled into Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra subscriptions — never sold standalone.
- Google Workspace Business Standard and above include NotebookLM Plus as a core service at no additional cost. This is the single most commonly missed money-saver.
- Every tier runs the same Gemini 3 model. Paying more buys you higher limits, not a smarter assistant.
- Google restructured the lineup at I/O in May 2026, splitting Ultra into two SKUs — so any pricing article written before then is wrong.

How Much Does NotebookLM Cost in 2026?
Here is the current ladder. All prices are US list prices for monthly billing.

Is NotebookLM Free?
Yes. NotebookLM Standard is permanently free for anyone with a Google account — no trial window, no credit card, no expiry. It is not a teaser tier either. The free plan includes Audio Overviews, Video Overviews, mind maps, flashcards, quizzes, and Deep Research — if you want the full tour of the product itself, we covered what NotebookLM actually does separately.

What are the free plan's actual limits?
The constraint on the free tier is daily volume, not missing features. You get 100 notebooks with 50 sources each, 50 chat queries per day, and three Audio Overviews per day. For a solopreneur researching one topic at a time, that ceiling is nearly invisible. For a consultant running six client research projects simultaneously and generating an Audio Overview for each, you'll feel it inside a week.
Does Your Google Workspace Plan Already Include NotebookLM?
This is the question almost every other pricing article skips, and it's the one that saves businesses real money.
Back in February 2025, Google promoted NotebookLM and NotebookLM Plus from optional add-ons to core services within Google Workspace — the same category as Gmail, Calendar, and Drive. That means they fall under your existing Workspace terms of service, carry the same enterprise-grade data protections, and cost nothing extra. Google's Workspace Updates announcement
NotebookLM Plus is included for Business Standard, Business Plus, and Enterprise editions and above. Business Standard runs about $14 per user per month, and it bundles in far more than most owners realise — worth reviewing what's actually included in a Workspace plan before you buy anything extra. If you're on it, NotebookLM Plus is already sitting in your account.
What Plus adds over the free tier, per Google: roughly 5x the Audio Overviews, queries, notebooks, and sources per notebook; the ability to customise the style and length of responses; and — the genuinely valuable one for teams — shared notebooks with usage analytics. A shared notebook means your whole team queries the same grounded source set instead of each person uploading their own copy of the handbook.
In our experience onboarding small businesses onto Workspace, this is the most under-used entitlement in the entire suite. We routinely meet teams paying for a personal Google AI Pro subscription out of pocket while their company Workspace plan already includes a Plus licence they've never opened. If you're unsure which plan you're on, check which Workspace plan you're on. It's a two-minute look in the Admin Console.

NotebookLM Plus vs Google AI Pro: Which Do You Actually Need?
Answer first: if you're a business on Workspace Business Standard or above, start with the NotebookLM Plus you already have. Only buy Google AI Pro if you specifically need what sits around NotebookLM in that bundle.
That's the distinction people miss. Google AI Pro at $19.99/month isn't really a NotebookLM purchase — it's a Gemini purchase that happens to include NotebookLM Pro. The bundle carries Gemini across Google apps, 2TB of cloud storage, and higher Deep Research allowances. If you already have Workspace storage and Gemini in your Workspace plan, you may be buying a second copy of things you own. This is the same trap we covered when we looked at whether Gemini is included in Google Workspace.

The honest upgrade triggers for Pro are narrow: you need 300 sources in a single notebook, or you're running Deep Research many times a day.
Is there a student discount?
Yes. US students aged 18 and over with a verified .edu email can get Google AI Pro — which includes NotebookLM Pro — for $9.99 a month for 12 months, half the standard price. Verification runs through SheerID.
What About NotebookLM Enterprise?
Larger organisations can buy NotebookLM Enterprise through Google Cloud rather than through a Workspace plan, priced at roughly $9 per licence per month with a 15-licence minimum. This route makes sense when you need NotebookLM governed under Google Cloud rather than Workspace, or when your licence count doesn't line up with your Workspace seats. For most small businesses under 50 people, the Workspace core service is the simpler and cheaper path — and if cost is the driver, there are cheaper ways to get Google Workspace worth knowing about first.
Does Paying More Get You a Smarter NotebookLM?
No — and this is worth internalising before you upgrade. Every tier, from free to the $200 Ultra plan, runs on the same Gemini 3 backbone. Higher tiers do not produce better answers, better Audio Overviews, or better summaries. They produce more of them.
Audio Overviews are the clearest illustration. Free gives you three per day; Ultra gives you up to 100. But it's the same fixed two-host format at both ends. You're buying quota, not quality. The genuine feature exclusives are narrow — Cinematic Video Overviews, for instance, sit on Ultra.
So the upgrade question is never "will this be better?" It's "am I running out of room?" If you can't name the limit you're hitting, you don't need the tier.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I buy NotebookLM on its own?
No. NotebookLM is not sold as a standalone product at any tier. Paid access always arrives as a benefit of a Google AI subscription, a qualifying Google Workspace plan, or a Google Cloud Enterprise licence.
Does NotebookLM Plus cost extra on Google Workspace?
No. Since February 2025 it has been a core service on Business Standard and above, covered by your existing Workspace subscription and terms of service. There is no separate NotebookLM line item on your bill.
What changed in NotebookLM pricing in 2026?
At Google I/O in May 2026, Google restructured the consumer tiers and split AI Ultra into two SKUs — a $99.99/month plan with 20TB of storage and a $200/month plan with 30TB and higher limits. Articles that describe $19.99 as the "Plus" tier are out of date; $19.99 is Pro, and Plus is $7.99.
Is my company data safe in NotebookLM?
On Workspace plans, yes — as a core service, NotebookLM carries the same enterprise-grade data protections as Gmail or Drive. Your sources, queries, and responses stay within your organisation and aren't used to train Google's models. Personal free-tier accounts fall under consumer terms instead, which is exactly why you want staff using the company entitlement rather than a personal login.
Can I cancel a paid tier anytime?
Yes. Because the paid tiers are Google AI subscriptions, they follow standard Google billing — monthly plans end at the close of the billing cycle. Cancelling drops you to the free Standard tier rather than locking you out of your notebooks.
